Aqua socks, socks, snorkels and swim mask or goggles will be allowed in the swim leg of the event. Use of gloves, fins and floatation devices is prohibited. Wet suits are not permitted when the water temp. is 78 degrees or higher. |

We are pleased to announce plans for the Third Annual Springfield Tri Fest. Plans are in place for a kids triathlon, a sprint triathlon and an intermediate distance triathlon. All three races are sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Athleticare is title sponsor for the Springfield Tri Fest.
The first event of the Springfield Tri Fest is on July 26, 2008 at 10am. This event for children aged 5 to 13 is called the National City Bank Dew the Tri for Kids. This wonderful event for kids starts with a 100 yard swim inside Nelson Center at Lincoln Park. The kids then bike 1.1 mile inside the Park followed by a 1000 yard run. An awards ceremony for boys and girls will follow after the last runner crosses the finish line. Age groups are 5-7, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13 for boys and girls. Teams can compete with three kids per team.
The Iron Abe Triathlon (an intermediate course triathlon) will start at 7:30 am on July 27, 2008 at Lake Springfield. Participants will swim 9/10 of a mile in the lake and then bike 24.8 miles on rolling prairie. Runners then embark on a 6.2 mile run. An awards ceremony will follow after the last runner crosses the finish line. The Iron Abe is a national qualifer for the 2008 USA Triathlon National Championship for the intermediate distance triathlon. The Iron Abe is also a national qualifier for the USA Triathlon junior development series for males and females age 13-19. Cash awards totaling $ 3500 are given to the top three male, female, Clydesdale and Athena triathletes.
The Stoneman Sprint Triathlon will start at 8 am on July 27, 2008. Stoneman participants will swim 500 yards in the lake and then bike 12 miles on rolling prairie. Runners will then follow a 3.1 mile course. An awards ceremony will follow after the last runner crosses the finish line. The Stoneman Sprint Triathlon is a qualifier for the Illinois Senior Olympics.

Tri Training at Lincoln Park
To help individuals get prepared for these triathlons, an eight week free triathlon training program is being provided. Each Sunday morning starting June 1, 2008, individuals will be able to swim at no charge at the Nelson Pool from 9:30 am until noon for each of the next eight consecutive Sundays. Individuals will also receive instruction on how to prepare for and complete a triathlon, as well as individualized training instruction on swimming, biking and running. This training is being provided in preparation for the current year triathlon season as a means to promote the sport of triathlon.
